History

The town was named by its own residents in the mid-1860s. It was to honour the SA’s Post Master General at the time, James William Lewis. He had just given the go-ahead for a branch post office in Lewiston.

When the post office opened in the town’s schoolhouse in February 1865 it was run by Isabella Mitchell. She was the wife of William Mitchell, the town’s school teacher.

The school itself had been established in the late 1850s and ran until the mid-1940s when it was destroyed.

Lewiston today is recognised for its rural way of life. It is an area of crop and animal farming.

Gawler, which is 12 kilometres away, is the main commercial town in the area.
