The township of Hackham is one of Adelaide’s outer suburbs. It was a former farming region before the growth of suburbia took over. Hackham has a population of more than 4,000 people.

History

It is believed the town was named after a site in Gloucestershire by Edward Castle. He arrived in Australia from the UK in the 1830s and named Hackham after his former home.

A daily coach linked the town with Adelaide from 1866 but the settlement failed to grow beyond a post office, hotel and school. It settled as a farming region until the 1970s when the development of Adelaide took over the area.

Lifestyle and entertainment

The Coast to Vines rail trail links Adelaide with its southern suburbs. It runs for more than 30 kilometres and is open to walkers, runners and cyclists.
It mostly follows the disused Willunga Railway Line and offers a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists to get out and about.
