Glenside is a suburb of Adelaide located in the City of Burnside. It’s very central, sitting just 2km from Adelaide’s central business district. Glenside has a population of more than 2,200.

History

First settled in the 1840s, Glenside used to be part of a larger area called Knoxville. The area became known for its slaughterhouses, which once provided over half of the lamb consumed in Adelaide. Many other businesses established themselves in Glenside, including Cobb & Co and Symons & Symons.

The Glenside Hospital was built in 1870, and was a major mental health centre until its closure in 1980. In 2007, the site began a large-scale redevelopment as the mental health wing of the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Adelaide Central School of Art and the South Australian Film Corporation are both based in Glenside. The suburb has a small commercial hub next to its western border, which includes a Coles supermarket and the Burnside Village shopping centre. The only orthodox Jewish synagogue in South Australia is based in Glenside, as is a park named Symons & Symons Reserve.
