Coromandel Valley is a residential suburb in Adelaide, South Australia. It’s located 16km from the central business district and has a population of 3,779.

History

The area’s name comes from a ship called the Coromandel. The ship arrived in Holdfast Bay from London in 1837 with 156 English settlers. Some of the sailors were deserted after the ship reached the shores and took refuge in the hills of the region.

The suburb established itself in the late 1800’s with businesses like Alex Murray & Son’s ham and biscuit factory setting up in the area.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Coromandel Valley Primary School was established in 1877. It is one of the oldest schools in South Australia. Opposite the school is the original St. John’s Anglican Church, which was built with local stone.

The area has multiple parks. These include the Frank Smith Park, which has a wetland.
