Based in greater Adelaide, Colonel Light Gardens is a suburb in the City of Mitcham. According to the 2006 census, it has a population of over 3,200 people.

History

Colonel Light Gardens takes its name from Colonel William Light. Colonel Light was Adelaide’s first Surveyor-General. The area formerly went by the name “Grange Farm”. During World War I, the area east of Goodwood Road was an army training camp.

In 1915, the Vaughan Labor government purchased a tract of land. They intended to establish it as a “model garden suburb”.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Colonel Light Gardens features several well-preserved bungalow homes. 1999 saw the placement of this suburb on the Register of the National Estate.

The suburb boasts beautiful tree-lined streets and open spaces. This marks it as “Australia’s best example of a garden suburb”. Visitors to the suburb will notice its unusual radial entrance design. According to local myth, the suburb was designed to look like a rising sun, or Union Flag when viewed from above. According to the Colonel Light Gardens History Society, this is not true.
