Bridgewater is a rural suburb of the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. It is situated south-east of the city of Adelaide and has a population of around 3,500.

History

The town of Bridgewater was established in 1840. It was originally named Cox Creek after a man called Robert Cock who explored the area in 1837. The first use of the name Bridgewater comes from the Bridgewater Hotel, which was owned by a man called James Addison.

In 1857, a man called John Dunn built a flour mill next to the hotel and decided to rename the town, Bridgewater.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bridgewater has some beautiful European gardens and views over the hills to Mt Lofty. The area is close to some historic pubs, gourmet restaurants and modern shops.

There are also some excellent schools, sports clubs and playgroups in the suburb.
