Belair is a suburb in South Australia in the southeastern foothills of Adelaide. At the base of the Mt Lofty Ranges, it has a population of around 4,400.

History

The suburb was set up during the settlement of Adelaide as a source of timber. The origin of its name is uncertain. It is thought to perhaps have gotten its name after Bel Air in Martinique, France. This was the birthplace of Gustav Ludewigs’ wife Maria, the man who subdivided the area. It could also have gotten its name from Eugene Bellairs, a Government Surveyor who lived in the area.

A post office opened in 1859 but was moved in 1881 to near its present position.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

It is home to Belair National Park, a popular place for feeding ducks, walking, and cycling. It is also home to Belair Country Club which has an 18-hole public golf course adjacent to the national park.
