Yarrabah is an indigenous Australian community that is located on Cape Grafton. It is around 53km by road from the Central Business District of Cairns. It has a population of 2,371.

History

In the 19th century, there was an indigenous Australian tribe living in the Yarrabah area. A church missionary called Ernest Gribble tried to get them to move into his mission, and eventually they did.

In 1957, people living in this community wanted to complain about the way they were being treated. This included not having enough food, and bad working conditions. They held a protest strike.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Yarrabah has a few small shops and eateries, but most people travel further afield to get what they need. There is a well-equipped public library, and a monthly newsletter called the Yarrabah News. This started in the 1970s.
