The coastal town of Wynnum is a suburb of Brisbane. It is 16 kilometres outside of the CBD and has a population of more than 12,200 people.

History

Until the railway arrived in the 1880s the area east of Brisbane was relatively unsettled. While the town is next to the ocean, at Moreton Bay, the shoreline is mostly mangroves and mudflats.

Once Wynnum got its railway link, growth was fast. By the 1920s Wynnum had its own town council and mayor.

Formerly, the town had the feel of a rural, country town. Recent residential development in and around Brisbane has led to a greater diversity in housing.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wynnum has three railway stations linking it to the city and beyond. There are several primary schools and high schools serving the community.

The town has a number of sports clubs that have been running for many years.
