The town of Worongary is a suburb in the City of Gold Coast. It has a population of more than 5,500 people. It lies on the coast, close to the state boundary with New South Wales.

History

The town of Worongary was established in the mid-1800s. The main activity in the area was dairy farming. During the late 1890s the Queensland Department of Agriculture offered subsidies to dairy farmers.

In more recent years the town and surrounding areas have seen rapid growth in population numbers. Many former farming areas have been transformed into new residential estates.

The town’s state school opened in 1993.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today many buildings in Worongary are listed as heritage sites. The Schmidt Farmhouse is one example of a traditional south-Queensland dairy farm.
