History

Mackay is located in the suburb of Mackay. The original inhabitants of the area are the Yuibera. The suburb and city gain their name from one John Mackay. Mackay was an Australian pioneer, one of the first European men to cross what is today the Clarke Range. He also took part in a practice known as “blackbirding”.

West Mackay is a historic suburb with various amenities including a post office. It has two schools, one public and one Catholic. The suburb is home to numerous heritage-listed sites. The Mackay General Cemetery, for example, operated from 1863 to the 1990s. This makes it one of the oldest regional cemeteries in the state.
