Warwick is a town located 130km south-west of Brisbane. It has a population of over 15,500.

History

First settled by a squatter named Patrick Leslie, the town of Warwick was born in 1847. By the 1870s, it was on the railway line and had its own brewery and flour mill. Warwick also acted as the seat for several local government areas.

In 1917, it was the site of the infamous ‘Egg Throwing Incident’ that caused the formation of the Commonwealth Police. As Prime Minister William Morris Hughes gave a speech, a man stepped out of the crowd and hurled an egg at him. Hughes became furious, demanding an arrest. The local police refused, citing Hughes’ lack of authority. Within days, Australia had a unified police force.

Warwick features several attractions, like Pringle Cottage, Glengallan Homestead and the Warwick Art Gallery. A sculpture of Tiddalik, the greedy frog from the Dreamtime, watches over the Warwick Green Belt.
