History

Wacol is on the east bank of the Brisbane River. It is 18 kilometres from Brisbane’s central business district.

During World War II, the American military occupied a camp in the suburb. Named Camp Columbia, it was constructed in 1942. After the war, it passed over to the Australian military. It was also used as a migrant reception and training centre.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wacol is a small, historic suburb, home to many heritage-listed sites. These include the Park Centre for Mental Health and Wolston House.

The Park Centre today is among the largest psychiatric hospitals in the country. Established in the mid-1800s, it was first known as the Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum.
Wolston House also dates to the mid-1800s. An example of an early homestead, it remains today as a museum.
