Virginia is a suburb of Brisbane, located 10km north of the city’s central business district. It’s part of the City of Brisbane local government area, and has a population of more than 2,000.

History

Named after the American state, Virginia was first established as a settlement in the 1880s. It began as an agricultural community, with many farms springing up around the swampy land. Virginia joined the North railway line in 1888, and the Virginia Brick Company was founded in 1892. A post office followed six years later, and a thriving village had formed by the 1920s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Much developed over the 20th century, Virginia is now a residential suburb with strong commercial leanings. It has a host of retail outlets, from auto part depots to a Christmas Shack. Supermarkets, banks and specialist food shops are also present. The Virginia Golf Club is a popular draw, as is ARC Hill Park towards the suburb’s south.
