Tully is one of the largest towns in the Cassowary Coast region. The Queensland suburb has a population of around 2,500. Nearby suburbs include Birkalla, Silky Oak, Bulgun, Walter Hill, Mt Mackay and Jarra Creek. Cairns is around 142 kilometres away, and the nearest beach is less than half an hour’s drive east.
History
William Alcock Tully surveyed the area in the 1870s. It was his name that was given to the Tully River. The suburb itself was named after the river and was properly established in the 1920s after a sugar mill was built there.
In more recent years, Tully was devastated by Cyclone Yasi when it hit the area in 2011. Winds of around 190 miles per hour destroyed homes and a high school.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
There are lots of primary and high schools to choose from in Tully, so the area is ideally suited to families. Tully State High School has been educating local youngsters since 1964. But in 2011, Cyclone Yasi destroyed it. Since then, the school has been rebuilt and maintains its reputation for excellence in maths, science and technology.
