Tugun is a suburb on the Gold Coast. It has a beachside location just 7km from Coolangatta and 96km from Brisbane. The suburb sits at the junction of the Gold Coast and Pacific Highways. It has a population of 5,976.

History

The suburb takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning “breaking waves”. Before the Tugun Bypass opened, the highway junction was a notorious site of traffic jams.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Gold Coast Desalination Plant is one of Tugun’s most noticeable landmarks. It sits just offshore from the town itself. Other local sites of interest are Flat Rock, Tugun Surf Life Saving Club, and Tugun Tavern.

The area is a popular tourist destination. Visitors enjoy the “golden four” beaches at Tugun, Bilinga, North Kirra, and Kirra. The suburb offers a wide selection of accommodation on Tugun Beach. Shops operate on nearby Golden-Four Drive.
