Tinana is a town in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region, perched on the bank of the Mary River. It’s directly opposite the town of Maryborough, connected by the Lamington Bridge. Tinana has a population of more than 4,800.

History

Built on lands settled by John Carne Bidwill in 1849, Tinana began as a single house. Bidwell named his house after the nearby Tinana Creek, and the site soon included sawpits and a store. Farms began to spring up around the creek, along with a hotel, school and post office by 1875. The town’s industries included sugar, brickworks and orchards. Many farms, as well as a timber bridge joining Tinana to Maryland, were destroyed in the flood of 1893. Since 1976, Tinana has effectively been a suburb of Maryborough.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Tinana has several Heritage-listed sites, one of which is John Carne Bidwell’s grave. The town is known for its parks, including Pioneer Park, Tinana Memorial Park, and Police Paddock Conservation Park. It’s a largely residential area, but features various shops and amenities.
