Tin Can Bay is a coastal town and wider locality in Queensland. It’s based in the Wide Bay-Burnett region, around 218km north of Brisbane. Tin Can Bay falls under both the Fraser Coast Region and the Gympie Region local government areas. It has a population of more than 2,000.
History
Once known as Wallu, the town gained its current, distinctive name in 1937. The reasons behind the name are not entirely known, although many believe it derives from the Aboriginal word, “tin-kun”. This refers to a type of coastal vine. Several industries sprang up around the early settlement in the 1850s, including timber, oyster fishing and dugong hunting. Tin Can became a favoured spot for holiday homes in the 1930s, and has enjoyed a thriving tourism scene ever since.

Tin Can Bay is an extremely popular fishing destination, as well as a boating hotspot. It’s famous for its visiting dolphins, which can often be seen at Norman Point. There are numerous restaurants and sports facilities around the town, and it’s surrounded by lush forests and pristine beaches.
