Sunnybank Hills is an outer southern suburb of Brisbane, 15km from the CBD. A large suburb, it adjoins the suburbs of Calamvale, Coopers Plains, and Acacia Ridge, among others. It has a population of around 17,000.

History

The suburb used to be part of a larger area known as Coopers Plains. When the railway line was extended from Yeerongpilly in 1885, names were given to stations along the line. One was named after Sunny Brae, a local farm. Brae is the Scottish word for bank, which is where Sunnybank got its name.

Sunnybank Hills was officially defined in 1971, although the suburb had been known by the name for years earlier.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb has many shopping centres including Shauna Downs, Centro Pinelands, and the large Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown.

Due to the fact that approx. 1 in 4 people in the area are Asian, the area is known for its many Asian restaurants.
