Stanthorpe is located in Queensland, close to the boundary with New South Wales. The land around Stanthorpe is referred to as the granite belt because the rock here is granite (which is unusual for the area). Stanthorpe has a population of 5,385 (2011 census).
History
Around 1872, tin was discovered in the area. This attracted people from all around the world who came to mine it. The name Stanthorpe is a mixture of Latin and Middle English in origin, and it means “tin town”.
When tin stopped providing a good return, lots of the miners changed over to agriculture including vegetables and grapes.

The Stanthorpe area is famous for its national parks and its wineries. Many tourists come to the region for this reason. There is a good choice of accommodation and places to eat in the area. There are also opportunities for fruit and vegetable picking at certain times of the year.
