Smithfield is a mid-sized suburb of the city of Cairns. It has a population of over 3,700 people and lies 15km north of Cairns’ central business district on the Captain Cook Highway.

History

Smithfield was founded in 1876. It was a rival to Cairns, which already dominated the region back then. The settlers built the original city as a landing place on the shores of the Barron River. However, the river flooded the area on a regular basis. Therefore, the original site had to be abandoned. A locality further inland kept the name, though.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today Smithfield is a regional business centre with its own high school and primary school. You can shop at the large drive-in shopping centre as well as at various supermarkets. Since 1995 the suburb is also home to the Cairns campus of James Cook University.
