History

The name of this suburb most likely comes from Sandgate in Kent, England. An early surveyor called James Burnett is thought to have named it.

By 1874, there was a coach service that linked Sandgate to Brisbane. However, the suburb began to develop more quickly after the railway reached it in 1882.
