Located in the Bremer Valley, Rosewood sits 60 kilometres to the west of Brisbane. The small, rural town is situated on the Toowoomba railway line. It has a population of 2,155.

History

The town takes its name from one of two local trees. Early industry in the area involved the harvesting of valuable timbers. Rosewood’s growing populace practised farming and sawmilling during and after the 1880s.

Rosewood also has a rich history in the coal mining industry. The first mine was opened in 1918. The Lanefield Colliery operated from 1934 until 1965. Another local colliery, Westvale Colliery, was open from 1929 until 1960. The town’s last mine, New Oakleigh Mine, closed in 2013.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Rosewood is home to several sites of historical interest. These include Glendalough, Rosewood Courthouse, and St Brigid’s Church. The town also boasts a showground as well as swimming, golf, and bowling venues.
