Rochedale is an outer southern suburb of the Brisbane. It is 17 kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD. It has a population of over 1,000.

History

The first settlers started farming in the area in 1865. The area’s soil is extremely good for agriculture.

The suburb’s namesake is the Roche family. They emigrated from Ireland in 1860 and settled in the region. The family built the ‘ Rochedale’ homestead in 1868.

Rochedale State School opened in 1931.

Residential development boomed in Rochedale in the 1960s.

In 1979, the southern part of Rochedale was split off. The new suburb is called Rochedale South.

A waste-to-energy facility has been generating electricity since 2004.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Rochedale backs onto the picturesque Priest Gully Creek. A wildlife corridor has been set up to preserve the local flora and fauna.

Mt Petrie is in the neighbouring suburb of Mackenzie. It is surrounded by mostly undeveloped bushland. These bushlands are an important habitat for many native species. These include the koala, wallaby, and echidna. Spectacular views of Brisbane and Moreton Bay can be seen from Mouth Petrie’s summit.
