Richlands is an outer suburb of Brisbane, 16km southwest of the CDB. It has a population of over 2,000.

History

Richlands was part of the larger suburb of Darra until it officially became a suburb in 1975. The name is thought to be derived from the area’s productive horticulture or from Richland Estate, a small subdivision in the area.

Ipswich Highway was built in the late 1980s which improved access to Richlands. In 1996, Coca-Cola Amatil moved its operation from Fortitude Valley to Richlands.

The suburb benefitted from the opening of a new spur railway line from Darra through Richlands to Springfield and Springfield Central in 2013.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Richlands has many recreational clubs that include the Brisbane West Tennis Centre, Richlands Tenpin Bowl, and the Darra Oxley Pony Club.

The suburb was also home to the last operating drive-in theatre in Brisbane which opened in the late 1970s and closed in 2000.
