Red Hill is a Brisbane suburb located 3km from the central business district. It’s part of the City of Brisbane local government area, and has a population of more than 5,000.

History

Built over a hilly plain, Red Hill dates back to the 1860s. It had schools, churches and a tram line by 1898, and the Musgrave Road shopping was in full swing by 1918. Red Hill was originally part of the Shire of Ithaca. This was later declared the Town of Ithaca, before the council became part of the Brisbane City Council in 1925. Red Hill’s older architecture had fallen out of favour by the 1960s, but the ‘70s saw a significant revival still enjoyed today.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Red Hill retains many of its beautiful colonial buildings. Many of them are heritage-listed, including Normanby Hotel, St Brigid’s Church, and Ithaca Town Council Chambers. The suburb is very green, with Woolcock Park and Gilbert Park stretched across its northern border. Musgrave Road is still the main high street, boasting many shops and eateries.
