Based in Queensland, is a suburb in Mackay. It falls under the federal division of Capricornia. Racecourse neighbours the suburbs of Foulden, Te Kowai, and Erakala. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 242 people.

History

Four years after the occupation of Mackay, residents wanted to choose a place for the area’s first racecourse. In 1867, they formed the Mackay Turf Club.

By the 1870s, the area was used for sugarcane growing. In 1869 and 1873, small private mills opened. In 1886, the sugar growers opened the Racecourse Central Sugar Company Ltd.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Nowadays, this rural suburb is mostly used for growing sugar cane. The cane is then refined at the Racecourse Sugar Mill. The area has a heritage-listed building – Selwyn House on Cowleys Road.
