Petrie is a suburb of Brisbane located 24km north of the central business district. It borders on the North Pine River, and has a population of more than 8,500.

History

First called North Pine, this suburb’s name was changed in honour of a local man named Tom Petrie. He was an influential figure, known for his fair and good-natured dealings with Indigenous Australians. As an area, Petrie was once used mainly for pine plantations. These days, however, it’s a largely residential village suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Petrie’s town centre features a good selection of shops, including a Woolworths. The North Pine River is great for fishing and kayaking, and Petrie Railway Station connects to the Queensland Rail City network. Petrie has several Heritage sites; including Sweeney’s Reserve, Murrumba Homestead Grounds and the North Coast Roadside Rest Areas. It’s also set to become a university town in 2020.
