Ormiston is a suburb in Redland City, QLD, and is next to the suburbs of Wellington Point and Cleveland. 26km from Brisbane GPO, it has a population of over 5,600.

History

Prior to European settlement, the suburb was home to the Koobenpul people. They lived on the mainland coastal strip that stretches from Talwarrapin to the mouth of the Mairwar.

Ormiston was once part of the township of Cleveland. Land in the suburb was bought by Scottish aristocrat and founder of the Queensland sugar industry, Captain Louis Hope in 1853. He built Ormiston House in the centre of a 325-acre sugar estate.

The house was originally called Woojanness. It was renamed after the Hope’s family ancestral village of Ormiston, Scotland.

Ormiston is home to Ormiston College and Ormiston State School. It also has an amateur swimming club, a softball league, and a boxing club.
