Northgate is an industrial and residential suburb on the Sandgate railway line in Brisbane, 9km north of the CBD. It has a population of over 4,300 people.

History

After the railway line opened in 1882, the Melbourne firm, McKenzie and Holland, opened a workshop in the area which was then called Toombul. The workshop made signalling and permanent way equipment.

After the North Coast line opened at Toombul junction, the name of the station was changed to Northgate Junction. This was later shortened to just Northgate.

By the 1990s, Northgate was marketed as a more affordable alternative to the high-priced housing in Clayfield.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Norths Rugby League football club, which is located in nearby Nundah, helped train the Melbourne Storm football players Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, and Cooper Cronk.

The Australian singers, The Bee Gees, were students at Northgate State School.
