Welcome to New Farm, QLD
The affluent riverside suburb of New Farm located just 2km outside of Brisbane’s central business district. The area is located on a large bend in the Brisbane River which partly surrounds the suburb. With over 11,300 people living there the suburb is one of the most densely populated in the area.
History
The suburb is one of the oldest and was originally known as the Binkinba by the Turrbal Aboriginal tribe who once lived in the area. The word means “place of the land tortoises”. The first settlers in the area were farmers and there is also evidence of lime kilns.
In the late 1800s, horse-drawn trams were the main form of transport until they were replaced with an electric version in 1897. After suffering as a low rent culture area in the 1980s, the suburb has undergone a total transformation. With major redevelopment taking place during the 1990s and beyond it is now a diverse and vibrant community.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
New Farm has several heritage sites and buildings including The Village Twin Cinemas, the former CRS Refinery, and many others. Good transport links via the cross river ferry and the road network. The area is also serviced by several bus routes that run between the suburb and the city centre.
