A suburb of Ipswich, New Chum is located 34km south-west of Brisbane. Though the Australian Bureau of Statistics does not provide a population number for New Chum, there are 200,000 residents in Ipswich as of 2017.

History

A pivotal point in New Chum’s history was the gold rush of 1860. To the surprise of many miners, the New Chum Hill held vast amounts of a substance called ‘Kiandra Lead’ which was found to be rich in gold.

The name of the suburb derives from this time period, as ‘new chum’ was a term used to describe convicts who had recently arrived.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The nearby Prince Alfred Hotel was named “Hotel of the Year” for 2016 at the Queensland Hotel Awards. It provides a great option for accommodation or a meal and a drink.

The Bailey Street Reserve is a beautiful area of natural beauty located just east of New Chum.
