Nelly Bay is a village on Magnetic Island and a suburb of Townsville, Queensland. It is a tourism hub on the island and has a population of 1055.

History

Robert Hayles, a local entrepreneur, started bringing tourists to the bay in 1911. By 1917, a jetty was built in the bay.

During World War II, an anti-aircraft battery was built on the foreshore of the bay. The concrete foundations of the battery still exist today. However, they are now overgrown and covered by a housing estate.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Nelly Bay is home to Magnetic Island’s largest development. It’s called the Nelly Bay Harbour or Magnetic Harbour. It has a ferry and barge terminal, with an emergency services helipad. It also has retail services, a marina and multi-storey residential buildings. A ferry service goes from the area and Townsville.
