Welcome to Mundubbera, QLD
Only 1,200 people live in Mundubbera. The small town on the shores of the Burnett River lies 405 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.
History
The name Mundubbera is of Aboriginal origin. It can be translated as “footsteps in the trees” or “meeting place of the waters”. The first Europeans arrived in the 1840s. However, the town wasn’t founded until the early 20th century. The first citrus plantation was established in 1933. More and more orchards followed, which is why Mundubbera sees itself as the “Citrus Capital of Queensland”.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
During fruit picking season the population can double. To honour the important role of citrus fruit in Mundubbera, the town has put up a huge fibreglass model of one – the Big Mandarin.
The town’s location at the edge of the outback also makes it a popular with bushwalkers and rock climbers. The nearby Auburn River National Park features great caves, swimming spots and hiking trails.
