Mooloolaba is a Queensland suburb on the Sunshine Coast. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 7,300 people. The suburb lies 97km from Brisbane. Nearby towns and suburbs include Minyama, Buddina, Parrearra and Buderim.

History

Mooloolaba gets its name from ‘mulu’, an Aboriginal word for snapper fish. Other translations suggest the suburb’s name originates from the native word ‘mulla’, meaning red-bellied black snake.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mooloolaba is a popular tourist town. The esplanade facing the beach is home to a number of souvenir shops as well as galleries and restaurants. Camping grounds and backpacker hostels are very close to the beach.

There’s an aquarium on the esplanade where you can sign up the only shark diving experience on the Sunshine Coast. There’s also a tidal touch pool where little ones can learn about some of the ocean’s creatures. If you want to get up close with friendly seals, there’s a chance to swim with them at the aquarium.
