Based in Queensland, Monto is a town that lies on the Burnett Highway. It is 500km north-west of Brisbane and 235km south of Rockhampton. It falls in the North Burnett Region and the state electorate of Callide. According to the 2006 census, Monto has a population of over 1,400 people.
History
In the late 1840s, European settlers arrived in Monto. They managed big pastoral holdings in the valley’s north.
In the 1870s, gold was found along Three Moon Creek. This brought more settlers to the area. When the gold ran out, settlers started farming and logging. These remain two of Monto’s main industries.
