Miles is a small town in Queensland on the Warrego Highway, 340km west-northwest of Brisbane and 211km northwest of Toowoomba. It has a population of over 1,800 people.

History

Miles was originally known as Dogwood Crossing due to its location on Dogwood Creek, which was named in 1844 by Ludwig Leichhardt, the explorer. It was renamed to honour William Miles, the Queensland Colonial Secretary. In 1878, Miles Post Office opened.

The economy of Miles is mostly based on agriculture and cropping. Timber production and cattle and sheep grazing are other important industries to the town. A mining industry that makes use of rich deposits of bentonite clay is beginning to grow in the town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Built by the Murilla Shire Council and dedicated on the 25th of April, 1967, the town features the Miles War Memorial and Wall of Remembrance.
