Welcome to McDowall, QLD

McDowall is a northern suburb of Brisbane, 9km north of the CBD. Notable for Raven Street Reserve, a 24.3-hectare bushland area surrounded by housing and roads, it has a population of over 6,800.

History

In 1875, before the suburb was named, McDowall State School opened. The school was named to honour Colonel John McDowall, an early settler of the area.

The Brisbane City Council wanted to name the suburb “Annand” after Colonel Frederick Annand when the population began to grow. Locals, however, wanted to name the suburb after the new school.

In the 1950s, the bushland was protected by Greenbelt designation when the area was subdivided. Since 1972, it has been managed by the council.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

McDowall is home to two community-based shopping centres which were all built close to the housing developments in the suburbs. The North-West Plaza is anchored by a Woolworths and McDowall Village shopping centre is anchored by an IGA supermarket.
