Maryborough is a heritage city located on the Mary River in South East QLD, 255 km north of Brisbane, and is serviced by the Bruce Highway. In the 2011 census Maryborough had a population of 24,037. It is part of the Fraser Coast Regional Council. Settled in 1847, walk beautifully preserved colonial streets once the home of merchant banks and soak up the history and heritage architecture of what was once Australia’s largest port that serviced the influx of free settlers.
The splendid old houses reflecting the classic timber Queenslander have given Maryborough the reputation as one of the most beautiful historic towns in QLD. This can be appreciated by following the Heritage walk which takes in over 28 historic buildings. Each Thursday is Heritage Market Day, highlighted by the firing of the time cannon at 1pm and attended by the town crier. The original wharf district is now an special heritage precinct called Portside, where stately colonial buildings have been caringly reinvented as pubs, restaurants and museums and art gallery. Maryborough is also the birthplace of Pamela Lyndon Travers, the creator of the famous fictional character Mary Poppins. A life-sized bronze statue of Mary Poppins and themed artwork is located in the centre of town.
A wonderful family location, Maryborough has a wide variety of education choices, with schooling provided by ten state schools and four private schools. Tertiary education is provide by Wide Bay Institute of TAFE. Maryborough is a shopping hub where you will find great fashion outlets, gift shops, homewares, collectables, decorator items and arts and crafts. There are also a number of antique stores for those who love searching for that special treasure. Major shopping is provided by four large supermarkets which include Country Target and Kmart.
