Maroochydore is an urban suburb in the Sunshine Coast, 104km from Brisbane. It has a population of over 47,600.

History

In 1842, Andrew Petrie gave the area the name Maroochydore. The name comes from the Aboriginal indigenous Yuggera word ‘Murukutchi’ meaning redbill. Redbill is the name of the black swan that lives in the area.

The town was subdivided from the Cotton Tree reserve by the surveyor Thomas O’Connor in 1903. William Pettigrew, a Brisbane sawmill owner, later acquired the land.

Maroochydore, as it’s known today, began to emerge in 1912. The Maroochydore Post Office opened in 1922.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town is home to a waterfront residential estate known as Maroochy Waters, next to the Maroochy River. One of the last canal projects built in Queensland, it was the training ground for Clint Robinson, the 1992 Olympic gold medallist.

It is the sixth town mentioned in the original version of the song “I’ve Been Everywhere”.
