Mareeba is a town in Far North Queensland. It sits 417 metres above sea level on the Atherton Tableland. It has a thriving population of 10,181.

History

Mareeba was founded in 1877. Before then it was home to the Muluridji people. James Venture Mulligan was the first European to arrive in May 1875. The town takes its name from an Aboriginal word that means “meeting of the waters”.

Mareeba Airfield served both Australian and US personnel during World War II. The forces used it as a staging point for battles over the Pacific and in New Guinea.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The local area produces a rich variety of goods. These include avocados, bananas, coffee, mangoes, nuts, lychees, longans, pineapples, sugar cane, and tea tree oil. The Mulligan Highway is the town’s main street.

Mareeba hosts a rodeo each July. Local hotels include The Anthill, The Gateway, and The Graham.
