Malanda is a town and locality in Far North Queensland, 1,689km from Brisbane and 73km from Cairns. On the Atherton Tableland in the Tablelands region, it has a population of over 2,000.

History

The name is thought to come from the local Aboriginal word meaning “waterfalls”.

The town was first developed in the 1900s after tin and copper were discovered at Herberton. This led to a stream of engineers and miners moving over the mountains to the area from the coast.

James English and James Emerson moved into the area in 1908 and saw the district’s dairy potential. The industry grew and by 1919, the town had its own butter factory.

Due to the local industry, John Prince set up a sawmill in the town in 1910. In 1912, Malanda Post Office opened.

The town is 1km from Malanda Falls Conservation Park, which protects a small tropical rainforest remnant.
