The small town of Lowood is situated in the Somerset Region on the Brisbane River and it is 66km from the City of Brisbane. Over the years Lowood has become a popular area for commuters into Brisbane and small scale farming enthusiasts. Nearby Lake Wivenhoe has also made the area well-liked by boaters and fishermen. Lowood has a population of just over 3,300 people.
History
In 1884 the area was first established as a terminus for the now-closed Brisbane Valley Branch Railway. The settlement slowly expanded around the railway and the Post Office was opened in 1888 on the 15th of October.
The old Lowood Railway Station remains intact to this day and the adjacent land is now the Jean Bray car park area. There was an airfield in the area at Mt Tampa where the RAAF operated during the Second World War. The area became famous during the post-war years as the venue for the 1960 Australian Grand Prix.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The area has several heritage sites including the building that once housed the Royal Bank of Queensland. Estimated to have been built sometime between 1901 and 1917 the building now houses a dental surgery.
Since the Railmotor Service was discontinued in 1889, a bus service operated by Queensland Rail now runs between Lowood and Ipswich.
