The picturesque town of Kuranda forms part of the Shire of Mareeba in Far North Queensland. It is 25km north-west of Cairns. The population is 2,996.

History

The rainforest encompassing Kuranda has been home to the Djabugay people for over 10,000 years. Europeans began to explore the region in the early 1800s. Kuranda was first settled in the mid-1880s and surveyed by Thomas Behan in 1885.

Timber and coffee were important industries for many years. Tourism is now the backbone of Kuranda’s economy.

The Skyline Rainforest Cableway offers breathtaking views of the World Heritage rainforest. The Kuranda Scenic Railway winds its way through the rugged landscape, passing through deep ravines.

There are plenty of chances to catch a glimpse of the area’s diverse wildlife. Visit the Kuranda Koala Gardens, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary or Birdworld Kuranda. The area is a vibrant arts and craft centre and many people flock to the colourful local markets.
