Kowanyama is a town in Far North Queensland. On the Gulf of Carpentaria side of Cape York Peninsula, it has a population of over 1,000.

History

The area is home to the Kokominjena, Kokobera, and Kunjen people. It gets its name from the Yir-Yoront word meaning “the place of many waters”.

Trubanamen Mission, now known as the old mission, was set up inland on Topsy Creek in 1905. The aboriginals were gradually drawn from the lands into the settlement. In 1916, Mitchell River Mission was founded on the town’s current site and the previous site was abandoned.

With over 1000 people, it’s one of the largest communities on the Cape York Peninsula.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town is home to a Community Justice Group. The group meets to discuss issues with the town and make recommendations. This group includes a Council of Elders who the council consults before making community decisions.
