Kirwan is a suburb of the Townsville region in Queensland with a population of over 20,000. The area has essential amenities close by and continues to be developed.

History

The suburb of Kirwan was named by the Thuringowa Shire Council after an early farming family. Kirwan was once a farming town. It later became occupied by soldiers during World War II.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Kirwan grew and its first primary and high schools opened. Ryan Catholic College opened in 1979.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kirwan is home to many restaurants and a few shopping centres. The area has churches, medical centres and hotels, as well as a cinema, police station and fire station nearby.

There are a few parks and lots of sporting facilities. Kirwan is best known for the National Rugby League team, the North Queensland Cowboys.
