History

The suburb takes its name from early settlers Mary and James Kelso. The Kelsos ran a cattle property called Laudham Park in the 1870s. The Townsville City Council reclaimed over 1,600 hectares of Laudham Park to build the Ross River Dam in 1970.

Most of the former site of Laudham Park is now submerged. Kelso became more residentially developed in the 1960s. The local school, Kelso State School, opened in 1963.
