Kangaroo Point is a suburb in Brisbane that sits exactly east across the Brisbane River from the CBD. It has a population of 7,000.

History

Prior to European settlement, Kangaroo Point was home to the Turrbal people. It is one of the first suburbs in Brisbane to be settled and therefore one of Brisbane’s oldest.

The explorer John Oxley described the area as a “jungle, fringed with mangroves with the higher land open forest, covered with grass” in 1823. It was used for growing crops during the time of the subsequent convict settlement from 1825 to 1841.

The suburb was dominated by factories of heavy engineering businesses, especially those involved in the maritime industry, for many years.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is a popular recreation spot. It’s home to the Story Bridge, a steel cantilever bridge that spans the Brisbane River, and Kangaroo Point Cliffs, a popular spot for abseiling and rock climbing.
