A small outback town in Central West Queensland, Jundah is the administration centre of the Barcoo Shire. Situated on the Thomson River, it is 1,122km west of Brisbane. The population is 350.
History
The name Jundah comes from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘woman’. The area was established in the 1880s by pioneers Durack and Costello.
Over the turn of the 20th century, the area was renowned for opal mining. This industry lasted 20 years but declined due to water shortages in the area.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Sheep and cattle are the main industries in Jundah today. The town’s Historical Museum offers an insight into the early pioneering days. Every year, the town celebrates its German-Australian heritage by celebrating ‘the world’s most remote Oktoberfest’.
Welford National Park is 45km south-east of Jundah. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the rare yellow-footed wallaby. Thomson River is a great fishing spot with a variety of fish including yellowbelly, catfish and bream.
