Located on the Flinders Highway, Julia Creek is a small town in mid-north Queensland. It is 664 kilometres west of Townsville. The population was last recorded at 369.
History
Julia Creek is named after the niece of Donald McIntyre, the first European settler in the area. It was originally called Scorpion Creek.
The town began to grow when the railway line from Richmond was extended to service the nearby copper mines. A post office opened in 1910 followed by a one-room school in 1911.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town’s main industries are now cattle, sheep and mining at BHP Cannington. It is renowned for being a major cattle sales and stock trucking centre. The town also houses a public library, swimming pool and a visitor and cultural centre.
Julia Creek is home to the extremely shy Julia Creek Dunnart, a rare and endangered marsupial.
